How Do I Start?

Before starting a project DO YOUR RESEARCH.   Start with ideas.  Look through gardening books and magazines for pictures that appeal to you;  Color schemes that please your eye;   Features that you would like to enjoy.

Once you have some basic thoughts of what you may want,  put your goals on paper.   Do you want an area that provides shade for your hammock?  Would you like a garden chair under a trellis to read a book?   You want a pond because the sound of flowing water relaxes you or watching dragonflies is fascinating.  Even if it seems impossible to achieve.  Put it down on paper.   Perhaps you would love an acre sized pond but you live on a postage stamp lot.  As you research you may learn you could have a pond in half a barrel and still have the relaxing sound of water and dragonflies to watch.

Research each goal – what is needed to build, buy or achieve your objective?  Knowing the steps needed to accomplish your goal allows for smooth implementation of your plan.  You will understand the costs involved.  The amount of time each step will take.  Where you can locate supplies and plants.  Take the time and effort to do research.  Give  yourself the opportunity to tract down less expensive options,  sales on items you need or even finding items free!  Keep in mind recyling, reusing and redistribution resources available in your area.  Knowing what is involved is essential for a positive outcome.  It will be less stressful.  You will enjoy working out a plan to incorporate your ideas into a beautiful edible landscaped area.  When the project is finished you will have accomplished your goal and be satisfied.

Thinking of transforming existing gardens or lawns into edible oases?

Take time to read ‘Edible Landscaping’ books to gather ideas to incorporate into your plans.

I recommend starting with:    “designing and maintaining YOUR EDIBLE LANDSCAPING NATURALLY“  by Robert Kourik and Rosalind Creasy  ISBN 1 85623 026 0

Each short, concise section introduces you to areas of edible landscaping to consider before designing your plan.  This type of  landscape can be implemented to suit your own available time and will bring pleasure and satisfaction.  Robert gives listings of other books for further research at the end of each section.  A plethora of information.

Robert’s book is a valuable resource for learning how to transform your landscape into a beautiful, bountiful pantry for you, your family, friends, neighbors and wildlife.
