November 2010

I haven’t kept up with goings on in the gardens this year. This spring I broke both leg bones, of my left leg, off at the ankle (working in the garden of course).  I had to be surgically put back together. I was so looking forward to a really good year of gardening too.  I had all sorts of plans.  Rearranging plants and expanding beds. Oh well.  Now I can plan for next years gardens. But I will be most careful to doing things slower and methodically, and watch my footing. I certainly do not want a repeat of this year!

By mid summer I was able to do some weeding but many of my beds got a bit overrun. Actually it was helpful because we had such dry weather the TALL plants help conserve moisture in the soil.

I did manage to get some tomatoes and a few cucumber plants in. The garlic I planted last November did very well. This November I planted more than last year. I have over 300 cloves planted.

I had a variety of plants that I started late in the season that I’m overwintering in the house.

Carl, my husband, built a tiered plant stand to hold my plants indoors for winter. He used reclaimed wood from the floor we replaced last year.  I stained it and he sealed it. It’s beautiful. He hung  my metal halide light over it for me.

How Can We Help The Earth?

How can we help our earth? Consider saving water and energy, lowering carbon emissions and changing your use of harmful chemicals and pesticides to more environmentally friendly options. Just watched slide show by Christina Reid on ‘How Humans Helped the Earth in 2010′. Put your cursor over each  picture to read the text.

It helps us to stop and take a look at how our activities affect the very planet we depend on for life. Plant more trees. Make them edible trees while your at it! Please follow the link below and check it out.
